Help Your Brain. Help Everything

30/01/2025

From fighting brain rot to combating a natural disaster. Something for everyone!

Ugh, the winter blues. (Still! I know I wrote about drab dull days a short while ago.) In Berkshire and all other the UK, the weather’s not been great for months, and 2025 isn’t showing any signs of being much better. However, if you want to feel better – physically, mentally – reducing your screen time and getting outside more will make you feel better – despite the grey skies. You don’t need to spend any money or do anything complicated – just stepping out of your front door and going for a walk will help. You don’t have to up anything, you just need to get a better balance. ‘Brain rot’, as they call it, isn’t good for anyone.

You don’t have to believe me – this is the overview of the research behind it, by the researchers.

So, OK, that makes sense and is on the upside of life. What do you find if you go outside? The answer, for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and for the UK’s Overseas Territories: nature in crisis. That’s one heck of a downside.

Again, you don’t have to believe me – here’s the government’s ‘Natural England’ blog summary, outlining a report on the state of the natural world we’re all living in – and, ultimately, are responsible for. The full ‘State of Nature’ report is linked-to from this site.

As the blog says towards the end: “This isn’t just sad – nature loss undermines our economy, food systems and health and well-being.”

This is not something to kick down the road, hoping someone else will sort it out. And, of course, you can still go out for a walk to help stave off brain rot. But you can also take an active role, yourself, in doing something to help pull nature back from the brink in Britain.

In the language of the report, it is Britain’s biodiversity that’s declining, and there are plenty of organizations working to rebuild and repair things. Here are just a few we’re particularly aware of. A quick search online will show plenty of other options. (And you can always join more than one.) The key thing is for you – yes, you, – to get involved. Because we all need to be doing something for the future of all of us – in Caversham, in Britain, in the world.
